Vinyasa yoga is a dynamic and flowing style of yoga that emphasizes the synchronization of breath with movement. Often referred to as "flow" yoga, it involves a series of poses that flow smoothly into one another, typically coordinated with the inhalation and exhalation of the breath. Here are some key features of vinyasa yoga:
  1. Breath-Synchronized Movement: Vinyasa yoga links each movement to a breath. For example, you might move into one pose while inhaling and transition to another while exhaling.

  2. Flowing Sequences: Unlike some other yoga styles that focus on holding poses for a long time, vinyasa yoga involves flowing sequences of postures.

  3. Creative and Varied: Vinyasa classes often have a lot of variety, with sequences being created by the instructor to offer a diverse and dynamic practice.

  4. Strength and Flexibility: The continuous movement in vinyasa yoga builds strength, flexibility, and stamina.

  5. Mindfulness and Focus: The combination of movement and breath helps cultivate mindfulness and concentration.

Vinyasa Yoga

Ashtanga yoga, which literally means yoga with eight limbs, is based on the sacred scriptures of the master Patanjali and Hatha Yoga. The yoga sutras outlined by Patanjali are guidelines for spiritual growth through correct actions.

The sutras consist of 8 parts, which do not need to be practiced in order. The main purpose of the sutras is to serve as a path to self-realization, enlightenment. To cleanse and purify both body and mind.

  1. Yama: Shows what to avoid in order to advance on the spiritual path.

  2. Niyama: Describes the five habits that you should incorporate into your routine in order to make spiritual progress.

  3. Asana: The ability to remain still with the spine erect for long periods.

  4. Pranayama: Control of the body's energy through breath control. Through breathing, energy is conducted throughout the body.

  5. Pratyahara: Taking attention, stimuli, from the 5 senses inwards. This is the stage when the body and consciousness prepare for deep meditation.

  6. Dharana: All consciousness and turbulent thoughts cease, allowing distraction-free meditation.

  7. Dhyana: The ability to merge with the self, the soul.

  8. Samadhi: The union of the individualized soul with the collective spirit, the infinite. It is the state in which the experience is whole, infinite and unique.
